About the event

The Typikon

Level II

The Liturgical Year

The Liturgical Year is a cyclical calendar that organizes the Christian feasts and seasons, allowing the faithful to celebrate the life of Christ and the events in the Church. It is divided into several key periods:

  • Advent

  • Christmas

  • Lent

  • Pascha (Easter)

  • Pentecost

  • Ordinary Time

The Moveable & Immovable Feasts

Feasts in the liturgical calendar can be categorized into two types:

  • Immovable Feasts: These feasts occur on the same date every year, such as Christmas (December 25) and the Feast of the Theophany (January 6).

  • Moveable Feasts: These feasts change dates each year based on the lunar calendar, such as Pascha (Easter), which is celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the vernal equinox.

The Daily Cycle

The Daily Cycle refers to the structure of worship throughout the day, which includes various services:

  • Vespers

  • Compline

  • Midnight Office

  • Matins

  • The Divine Liturgy

The Weekly Cycle

The Weekly Cycle is centered around the Lord's Day (Sunday) and includes:

  • The celebration of the Divine Liturgy

  • Weekly commemorations of saints

  • Special services for certain days, such as Wednesday and Friday fasting

This structure of the Typikon helps to guide the liturgical life of the Church, providing a rhythm and framework for worship throughout the year.
