The Orthodox Church

The Orthodox Church is the original Church founded by Jesus Christ through His Holy Apostles 2,000 years ago. She has not changed Her doctrine, worship, spirituality, and discipline in all that time. This in itself is enough of a miracle to testify to Her divine origin.

Though She has communities throughout the world, the Orthodox Church is best known to the world as that Church anchored in the countries where the apostles originally preached the Gospel and where the Saints of the first millennium planted churches throughout the Mediterranean world, Europe, northern Africa, and western Asia. Her historical bona fides are undeniable.

Today the Church confronts a world whose beliefs are radically opposed to Hers. The world says that truth is relative; the Church says it is absolute. The world says that happiness in this life is what it's all about; the Church says that this life is short, death is coming for all of us, and her primary mission is to get us ready for God's judgment. The world tells me that life is all about me; the Church tells me to take up my cross, get over myself, and live for God and neighbor. The world says that sexual deviance is the new normal; the Church says that God offers to us only monogamous and lifelong marriage between a man and woman or lifelong celibacy in a life consecrated to Him if we don't want to go to hell. The world is putting women in charge of everything; the Church has male-only leadership. The list goes on.

God wills that all men be saved, but not all men cooperate. Jesus Himself said that the way to life is narrow and few find it. So the Church is for everyone, but not everyone is for the Church. There is no sugarcoating this reality.

If you are a courageous soul who finds the call to the Cross invigorating instead of off-putting, keep reading. Below you will find the text of the Church's basic statement of faith, followed by links to material intended for inquirers.

The Statement of Faith

The Nicean Creed

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Only-begotten, begotten of the Father before all ages: Light of Light, true God of true God: begotten not made: being of one essence with the Father; by whom all things were made.

Who for us men and our salvation, came down from the Heavens, and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became man;

And was crucified for us under Pontuis Pilate, suffered, and was buried;

And arose again on the third day according to the Scriptures;

And ascended into the heavens, and sitteth at the right hand of the Father;

And shall come again, with glory, to judge both the living and the dead; Whose Kingdom shall have no end;

And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of life; Who proceedeth from the Father; Who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified; Who spake by the Prophets;

In One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church.

I confess one baptism for the remission of sins.

I look for the resurrection of the dead,

And the life of the age to come. Amen
